a return to video games
i've been replaying secret of mana recently and it's kind of wild how much... shorter and easier it is than i remember? turns out when you play a game as a kid you get an inflated sense of difficulty because you're a kid that doesn't know anything, and also of time because everything is harder and less clear and you don't know what you're doing.
like in the hazy memories of my childhood i remembered kakkara and the ice country as being solidly midgame stuff, and instead no they are like the things you do immediately after you've gone everywhere reachable by foot, which does not take long.
also so recently i was like "you know i want to actually be able to play all these video games i own" so few days ago i bought some converter stuff (like $50) + a big 4:3 monitor ($1) so i should be able to hook my ps2 up to something, finally, and try to play all these ps2 games. we'll see if all those games also seem really short and simple, given that i played them in my late teens rather than when i was like twelve.
also fun: so when i lived at my mom's i had a tv in my room, right? and when i moved out i packed up all my gaming stuff but i didn't bring the tv, since it was a giant old CRT and i wasn't really invested in having Games at my Fingertips. and so i had this box of game stuff just in my apartment, and then at a friend's house (where somebody stole like all my SNES & PS1 games incidentally) and then at my new place, etc etc. these things have been in storage, unused, for about eleven years now. i hope they all still work. the combination of cheap rubbery plastic and uh human skin oils, plus age, has meant that my ps2 controller's analog sticks are like, partially dissolved? i cleaned them up but they're still a little sticky. that's kinda gross.
anyway looking forward to getting to replay dark cloud 2. or suikoden ii maybe? finally being able to do all the postgame stuff in disgaea 2. etc etc etc video games.
i wonder if it's even possible to get ps2 games anywhere these days, since there are actually a bunch of old games i'd kinda like to finally play. we'll see.
