the biggest failing of dark souls 2 and dark souls 3 is that they retread the fundamental action of dark souls (kill the lords and burn their souls) and they assume you're up and with it so they don't bother introducing the concept, they just get straight to it: at the very start they set you on yr path that you will continue down for the rest of the game. whereas dark souls the first opens with "ring two bells" and then "go to anor londo" and it's only in what is essentially the start of the third act of the game that you're tasked with killing the gods and toppling their thrones. the arc of yr actions grow during the game, but for 2 and 3 they start you off there and then that's it until the rest of the game. so i was always kind of expecting an elaboration or extension to yr actions that you never actually get.
(this is also imo a weakness of bloodborne, although less so -- bloodborne says "find the nightmare newborn and silence its cry, lest this night of beasts go on forever" but it's so unclear as to what that might actually mean that it's much less of an actual "goal" and more just a weird thing somebody said to you.)
