the other day i was talking to somebody and they were comparing the merits of other social media, since i guess something akin to that 'sunsetting delicious' photo leaked for tumblr. and they were like "i don't really... get dreamwidth?? where's the tag search. how do you actually find blogs?? it seems like a hosting service for individual sites" and it made me think about how, what with facebook and twitter and tumblr and all these WEB 2.0 sites, essentially the point of the site is that you're always using The Platform; everything you do is interfaced through The Platform, and while it's possible to look directly at a feed of yr posts it's never really the intended use-case. it's about Being On {Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr} rather than having an actual, like, site of your own. everything is designed to facilitate searching and spreading and virality. so dreamwidth (/livejournal etc) which is definitely designed around a different kind of user experience is so strange as to be incomprehensible.
anyway i told them dreamwidth doesn't have native image hosting anyway so it would not be a good choice :V
oh and ursula vernon published a new short story which i thought was incredibly good. then i reread digger, which is also pretty good.
